My Career: How I discovered where my talent, passion and opportunity intersect - The Real Estate Entrepreneur (2023)

My Career: How I discovered where my talent, passion and opportunity intersect - The Real Estate Entrepreneur (1)

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up? Everything's ok. Me neither.

I'm sure we all know those people who knew by the age of 5 that they wanted to be a vet, got great grades, flew through vet school, and were incredibly successful and passionate about their calling.

This is not common. That's really weird. Most of us take a much messier path.

To fulfill our potential for fulfillment and make a positive impact on the world, we must find the place where our talents, our passions and our possibilities intersect.

Embarking on a path that you are passionate about but don't have the opportunity for is a great recipe for not being able to make a living and therefore not being able to make a big impact on the world to take world. Follow a path where you have talent and opportunity, but no passion is too bad. If you are not passionate, you will not develop your talent to its fullest potential and you will be inherently unhappy.

Monitoring: I have to stop here and say just because you're passionate doesn't mean you don't have rough days where you have self-doubt or are difficult. Being passionate means you are energetic in the process, and it is exciting to strive for constant and never-ending improvement in order to fulfill your potential.

My story is not linear. It's naive and confusing, with many bugs. I hope you can learn from my mistakes and reflect on your own journey through a slightly different lens.

Rodeo

My first love, like many American boys, was sports. I grew up with cops. My father and uncle rode bulls in high school and I spent time with my father's horses and my uncle's cows from a young age. We saw bull riding on TV and I wanted to be a cowboy.

I had my first calf when I was 6 and it was awful. I was a skinny, skinny, long arm 6 year old. Fortunately, my father encouraged me to practice and found a place to practice close to home. This was one of the most influential periods of my life where I learned a growth mentality. I think that's the point of sport for children. I practiced every week and improved dramatically. I developed this inner confidence that if I kept practicing and trying my best, I could get better at anything I set out to do.

My Career: How I discovered where my talent, passion and opportunity intersect - The Real Estate Entrepreneur (3)

My whole family spent many years traveling to small towns to play rodeo. Like baseball families, we went to 2-3 rodeos every weekend. We started winning often. My father had to fill out 1099 forms for his 7 year old son for several years.

He later wanted to become a professional bull rider. As I got older I started attending bull riding schools to learn and move to the next level of difficulty and size of the animal. However, something shocked me. Here I was one of the legends of the sport at school, he was my father's age, didn't have a big name and didn't move very well. It shook my passion. I practiced in the homes of current professionals and saw broken families and misery. It's not the norm, but it shook my passion.

My Career: How I discovered where my talent, passion and opportunity intersect - The Real Estate Entrepreneur (5)

I went to the high school rodeo and had some success, but the bitterness grew. I kept driving because it was a big part of my identity, but I didn't like it. I haven't practiced. I haven't seen it on TV. I realized that I have no passion for it.

  • Talent:Innate, yes. Unfulfilled is useless.
  • Dedication:NO.
  • Chance:No. Without passion you will not reach your potential.

Note: I love riding the bull today and have taken it to my heart. I cherish these memories with my family and the friends we made along the way. And the song "Dear Rodeo" by Cody Johnson breaks my heart more and more. singles. Time.

In high school, I found a new career to pursue. Getting good grades was easy for me and I spent 5 years in braces so dentistry seemed like a good way to make a living. Being self-employed and having "Doctor" in front of the name sounded great to me.

So I was a big predentist in college. I went all out. My resume was stacked. I spent many shadow hours on dental mission trips. A dentist from my hometown and I drove to Mexico for a few hours and did 3 day clinics to see patients frequently.

I went to Ecuador and hiked the mountainsides through rose plantations. Note how little mention is made of the dental work itself. I loved the adventure.

I have good grades and a very good DAT score. They invited me to some job interviews. BUT I didn't go in. I tried for several years but they didn't accept me. I was humiliated. My confidence was destroyed. All of my family members and friends knew why I went to college. I should be a dentist.

  • Talent:Ehhhh.
  • Dedication:For adventure, yes. Dentistry, no.
  • Chance: Not for me.

Business

(Video) Stop searching for your passion | Terri Trespicio | TEDxKC

I started reading book after book on various business topics. College was work, but it's that simple. Is this how it should feel?

This piqued my curiosity and I started trying different tasks at work. I would take one thing at a time and figure it out. I dived into something I didn't know how to do, read and learned about it, and then figured out how to do it. I built my confidence and extensive experience.

My employer was great. They kept letting me try new things because I had earned their trust by slowly achieving what I promised. I discovered an unexpected passion in business, but I didn't know what it meant. Business is a pretty broad subject and I hadn't figured out where to fit. I worked for the medical device company for 11 years, got my MBA, bought a house and learned a lot from some really talented people.

Fresh out of college and reading a few business books, a handful of friends and I started a think tank. A group of motivated and like-minded people who hold you accountable for your goals.

With the support of this group and my wife's unconditional trust, I experimented with many different businesses.

I've learned a little bit about myself through every failed or abandoned venture. I've invested in it. I've raised my own money, read various books, listened to podcasts, met with experts, and taken the time to give everyone a real chance.

However, he was onto something. I was energized by the process of learning, doing, learning, adjusting, etc.

invest in apartments

My Career: How I discovered where my talent, passion and opportunity intersect - The Real Estate Entrepreneur (10)

These paths and insights led me to my current company, Rebus Capital. Essentially, we are changing apartment complexes. In a way similar to home exchange, but the value comes not only from renovating the complex, but also from running a better business and implementing a business plan.

I have developed a passion for real estate. I knew I was interested.

But he had this passion to learn about a business topic. I enjoyed reading, researching, meeting experts and identifying best practices and strategies to improve some part of the business.

The commercial apartment building is a perfect marriage of these two passions.

  • Talent:Sim!
  • Dedication:Sim!
  • Chance:Sim!

By acting consistently over the years, my passion and talent in the field has opened up opportunity after opportunity. I'm energized by it. Make no mistake, I busted my ass with blood, sweat and tears for years. There are definitely days and weeks when it's hard. Working for yourself is humbling and often brings you to your knees in prayer. But it led me to discover my true unique ability and passion.

I enjoy learning a business topic (through reading, meeting experts and first hand experience), breaking it down into the important parts, creating a plan to implement improvements and best practices, identifying real experts and encouraging them , with business winning concepts. . Department.

This clarity came at a price. Trying many new things, failing, being humble and finally learning, which has uniquely driven me to do what the world needs. It was an adventure without lost steps. Each step taught me a lesson that built upon the previous one.

I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up, but I'm growing in that direction on purpose. Intending to be a good steward of the passions and talents that God has blessed me with.
